Chapter 20

Natalie

Natalie set aside the fact Marcela had been dishonest with her. Besides, she knew there were unexplained things in Marcela’s life. She hadn’t forgotten how she looked the night they met. That night hadn’t stopped her from trusting Marcela, and neither would this.

Natalie had her own demons—she could sympathize.

Demons she could leave alone, but not knowing what happened on Nick and Marcela’s date might send her over the edge. She hadn’t been this interested in someone’s love life since her own. No one had bothered to call her after the date. Nick and Marcela both knew how much she hated using the telephone, but if no was going to come by and inform the matchmaker how it went, she supposed she would have to call them herself.

Zero details. That’s what Nick gave her. He was so ungrateful. She hoped Marcela would be a little more giving.

Her patience had run dry, she didn’t bother with subtlety. “So, how did it go?” Natalie rattled a pen against the coffee table in her living room, holding her cell to her ear.

“Good,” Marcela said.

“That’s it? That’s all you’re going to give me. That’s exactly what Nick said.”

“It is?” Marcela’s voice changed from its indifferent tone. “What else did he say?”

“Nothing, well, except something about liking the shoes you wore. What does that even mean? Nick doesn’t notice shoes.” It was like he had talked to Natalie in code, just to tick her off.

Laughter filled the receiver and Natalie held the phone away from her ear.

They needed to get down to more pertinent information. “So, did he ask you out again?” She sat up in her chair. It rocked forward closing the magazine she had been ignoring.

“Hmm… Sort of.”

“Sort of?” If she referred to another friend thing Natalie might smack someone. They had chemistry. Sure, she hoped for it, but then she saw it with her own two eyes as they flirted relentlessly in Ellie’s kitchen.

“Well, he asked if he could pick me up for the singles’ activity on Friday.”

She lay her head back against the chair cushion. “Good, I think that’s good.” A good sign for Nick, anyway. She couldn’t expect him, all rusty and unpracticed in the dating department, to became Rico Suave overnight.

“You should come.” Marcela’s crazed words pulled Natalie out of her matchmaking analyzation.

Yeah, right. “Maybe.” Her body tensed with a thought she had no intention of following through with.

“Maybe, I’ll tell Nick to swing by and pick you up.” Marcela had good intentions, Natalie was sure. She just didn’t understand, and Natalie hoped she never would.

Still, she didn’t want her friend getting her hopes up. “Marcela, I—”

“What? You what? You need another week to think about it? Nat, you need this. Remember, do it today, it will be done tomorrow. Besides you promised Nick you’d think about getting out there. What better place to do it?”
